Before

Find a cabinet with lots of small drawers and paint it so it looks like an invitation rather than storage: a card catalog, a hardware organizer, a chest of drawers. Seal it against the weather, raise it off the ground, and put it where folks already walk.

Make the tabs, two sets, LEAVE ART and TAKE ART, sized for whatever slot or window your drawers have. Give over a couple of drawers to supplies: paper, pencils, markers, scissors, glue. That's the drawer that turns a curious passerby into somebody who made something.

When the cabinet is ready, invite neighbors to an “Artist session” in Plurality to seed the cabinet with art. Print the flyer and invite folks to join.

During

Let it be passive most of the time. This works because it asks nothing of anybody and is open at midnight.

During the Artist sessions, make it welcoming for anyone, not just professional artists. Bring coffee and donuts, give folks two hours to make something, and at the end tuck it all into the cabinet. And hold your nerve about the rules: supplies will walk, somebody will take three things and leave none. That's okay.

After

Photograph what shows up and the folks making it, and invite folks to record any other Moments.

Then find your manager. Watch for the kid or the neighbor who is always hanging around the cabinet, and ask them to look after it. Handing over the job is how the cabinet stops being yours and becomes the block's.
