Plurality
BEFORE YOU START

What you need

Before

Find machines before you find learners. Put out a call for the ones sitting unused in closets; you will get more than you expect. Four working machines and eight people is a good session.

Get a teacher with patience. Run it as a short series rather than a drop-in, because sewing takes a while to learn. Try four to six weeks with the same people and machines. Set it up in Plurality and use the Needs tab for machines, thread, scrap fabric, pins, and a good pair of scissors that nobody is allowed to use on paper. Print your flyer in Plurality and share widely.

During

Week one is getting to know machines and nothing else: threading, bobbin, stitch selection, and straight lines on scrap. Resist the urge to make anything and focus on building confidence.

Then make useful things fast. A tote bag, a cushion cover, or a hemmed pair of pants. It will help folks see the value and return next week.

Teach the repairs alongside the making. Most people arrive wanting to create something and stay because they can now fix things, which is the skill that saves them money every month.

After

Photograph the finished pieces held up by their makers and invite folks to record any other Moments. Then run a second series and ask the strongest learner from the first to co-teach it.

Keep the machines available afterwards if you possibly can, at a library, a hall, or someone's spare room.

Create a group in Plurality and make it a regular series of events.
