Christmas used to mean the Side Hunt. Hunters would split into teams, go out on Christmas Day, and shoot whatever they could find; whoever came back with the biggest pile of feathers and fur won. It was a holiday tradition, and by 1900 conservationists were watching songbird populations fall because of it.
