Community Inspired
In 1956, John Dobson was a monk at a Vedanta monastery in San Francisco with an assignment to reconcile religion with science. He built a telescope out of a junk-store lens, then ground a bigger mirror from a 12-inch porthole glass salvaged off a ship. When he pointed the finished scope at the third-quarter moon, his first thought was, “Everybody's got to see this.”
