Patty Smith and her husband Tyler wanted the kind of neighborly life that's supposed to be possible only in the suburbs, except they wanted it in San Francisco. They brainstormed the usual moves: bake cookies and knock on doors, invite neighbors to dinner. They landed on something lazier and better. They were already drinking coffee together on weekend mornings, so they carried it outside.
